Vuforia AR Starter Kit Arrives Free in Unity Asset Store “HoloLens :: Next Reality

Mid-November, Vuforia Vuforia 6.1 officially released, which fully supports Microsoft HoloLens. They also published their AR Starter Kit at the Unity Asset Store, which contains scenes which show you how to use Vuforia features. While I haven’t found a confirmation yet, I think it’s safe to assume that the AR Starter Kit will work with HoloLens. I had already planned a Vuforia tutorial for this week, so as soon as I’m sure I’ll start working on it.

PTC, which acquired Vuforia at the end of 2015, and Unity announced a collaboration at Unite ’16 Los Angeles integrate the Vurforia augmented reality platform into Unity. In a recent blog post, Unity announced that with the new AR Starter Kit, users get a free Vuforia development license.

For those who are not familiar, Vuforia is a way to use a head-mounted display like the HoloLens, or even a smartphone, to view virtual objects in the real world using a “Image target“to map 3D models over it. A good example is the Caterpillar hologram demo from Microsoft Build ’16 earlier this year.

I suspect that we will see a lot of Vuforia compatible apps soon. Be sure to keep an eye here on NextReality for how to do this on Vuforia so you can use it in your own apps.
